Today we celebrate the independence and founding of our country. I wish you a happy Independence Day and 4th of July!
This past week the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the religious freedom enshrined in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. Even before the freedoms of speech and press and assembly the guarantees of the free exercise of religion is established:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
I was very happy that the Supreme Court recognized that and ruled in Favor of the religious people at Hobby Lobby. After the Supreme Court re-wrote Obama Care as a tax and found it constitutional for the government to require it citizens to buy a preferred product, I had my doubts that the Supreme Court would make the right decision. And because the Hobby Lobby decision was a split 5-4 decision, we as a country have cause for concern about future decisions.
By my count, the Supreme Court has ruled against the Obama Administration for the 13th time. This past week the Supreme Court in a unanimous decision ruled that when Barack Obama attempted to appoint government officials while the Senate was in session by claiming that it was a ‘recess appointment.’ For a person that claims to be a “Constitutional Scholar”, President Obama seems to completely misunderstand the limits that the constitution puts on the President and the Federal Government.
It reminds me of all the attempts to create regulations on guns despite the guarantee in the Second Amendment that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”. There are constantly attempts to infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens by some people that think they are smarter than everyone else.
And then there are some government officials that wanted to deny law-abiding citizens the ability to buy sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces in size. Fortunately for now, that law was struck down as over reaching their authority to ban the drinks. I have no doubt that we will see more attempts by government to protect us from ourselves by limiting our choices.
I fear that Ronald Reagan was right when he warned, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction”. I hope that we can guard and defend our independence and freedoms and liberties guaranteed by this great country.
Have a great Independence Day and guard your Freedom and Liberty vigorously.
