I am working on a bill SB170 that updates the Utah Identify Theft law. As part of this discussion, I have asked constituents to tell me if they have ever had their identity stolen.

Here is a link to SB170

So far in the survey, a majority have not had their identity stolen, but there has been a lot who have had their identity stolen.

I will post constituent stories as they give their approval to do so.

"M" from Saratoga Springs:

This past summer one of my credit cards (Paypal Mastercard) was used to make a foreign transaction for about $40. It was recurring and happened twice. I cancelled the card and got the amount refunded to me. I also had a similar transaction with a bank debit card (ING Direct card) 2 years ago. About $40 to some foreign transaction. I told the bank and they refunded it promptly. You can share these stories if you want.

"H" from Saratoga Springs:

I have had my identity stolen and i am still dealing with all the consequences. i have been super frustrated as they used my social security number to rack up over $12000 in charges from phone to satellite tv and despite filing a case, putting flags on all credit agencies, I still get bills and calls from collectors looking for a payment and my credit has suffered big time! I don't know what can be done but I hope that something can be done.
Thanks!

"L" from Saratoga Springs:

We have had criminals use our credit cards and bank ATM to make or attempt to make purchases on at least five separate occasions.  In all but one case the activity was caught and the sales were denied.  In each case we had to close the card and wait for a new one to be issued.  We now have life lock as well as the fraud departments from the bank and credit card companies looking out for us.  We do not use our Debit card to make on line purchases.

Don't think that only people from Saratoga Springs have experienced Identity Theft. I have other emails from constituents in Eagle Mountain that have also sent me emails. However, so far none of them have given approval to put their emails online.

I have had it stolen twice in two years. The problem is not enough resources are being used so criminals have an expectation they will not be caught. Creditors treat you like you are a scum bag and owe the money. One way to help would be to require merchants to check their public accessible card swipes machines once per day to look for skimmers, this should be reasonable as arm are located at banks or inside stores, gas pumps have to be read daily and if found every customers who used the infected machine.

Dave,

I haven't per se had it stolen, but it was compromised about a year ago when the records were hacked into at the Utah State Dept. of Health.  They gave me a year of free identity protection.

I have had my banking information stolen twice.  Both times my bank caught the illicit purchases before I did, contacted me, and quickly resolved the issue.
