Response to an email about my endorsement and support of Mayor Heather Jackson

I wanted to respond publicly to an email that I got last week. I asked if I could post it with or without the sender’s name. However, I have not yet heard back so I will generalize the questions and give my answers.

The email wasn’t quite a nasty-gram, but I do get some of those too.

The just of the email went something like this:

The email said that they saw in the newspaper that I was supporting Mayor Heather Jackson and that in the endorsement that I called her the…

My personal history with the Caucus and Convention System

I have shared this on many occasions, but I thought with the current discussions of the Caucus and Convention System I wanted to post it online.

I had never attended a caucus until 1998. I heard about the caucus on the Doug Wright show. He described how important it was to attend caucus so I looked up the information and drove into Lehi to attend caucus night. I found myself in a group of people that I really didn't know but I was impressed as they introduced themselves at how…

Report on SCC Meeting on October 27, 2013 at Historic State House in Fillmore Utah

Yesterday the Utah State Central Committee met to finalize parameters for how to improve and optimize Caucus night. For starters the name was changed to Neighborhood Caucus Elections to emphasize what purpose it serves and show that it is the grass roots level of…

Information relating to Utah Caucus (Neighborhood Elections) and Direct Primaries proposal

Sorry for the information overload, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible.

I was asked at the last Utah County Central Committee Meeting to provide information on the differences between Utah’s current caucus and convention system and the “Count My Vote” initiative to change to a direct primary. I am a firm believer that Utah’s Caucus system works well and promotes and encourages grass roots involvement in politics. However, I will attempt to be fair as I describe the differences…

I must be doing something right, Utah Democrats are trying to raise money off of me ;)

This is an actual Democratic Party Fundraiser email that was emailed today during our legislative session. I guess that they didn't like my speech on why we in Utah can manage our resources and lands better than the federal government:…

My statement in support of SB2001 Funding to Open Utah's National Park

Madam Speaker,

Our National Parks in Utah are in many ways what makes us who we are; they inspire us to new heights. These majestic parks are our mascots and our identities. We are happy and enthusiastic about inviting the world to come here and share these natural wonders with us.…

Media coverage of my proposed legislation to open National Parks if Feds can't or won't

On Monday Rep. David Lifferth said that he is in the early stages of drafting legislation that would call on the federal government to turn over management of the state's five national parks to the state if the government remained closed for more than 30 days.…

Chronology of my legislation to keep Utah National Parks open when the Federal Government can't do it

  1. The Federal Government shut down. Depending on who you are, you either blame the republicans, the democrats, President Obama, all of the above, or none of the above. After the NSA, military, and civilian military contractors were called back only 17% of the government were actually shut down.
  2. The Obama Administration got to choose what parts of government were essential and which were not. They chose to close the National Parks, Monuments, and Forests as…

My notes on legislation to open National Parks as State Parks when Feds can't do it

Our National Parks are some ways how we identify ourselves. They are what makes us who we are. Jeff Foxworthy  said that when God made Utah he was showing off.  These National Parks are our rallying points. They motivate us to be better. They are our inspiration.

I think that we need to have a stronger attitude than “Mother May I” to threats to shut down our National Parks.

I propose that we have an arrangement that we as a state will step up and protect, manage, and…
